PRIORY CHRISTMAS, - ADVENT 2011 to CANDLEMAS 2012.

The Rector writes

The Friends launched a strong Advent Service on the 27th November with strong readings, moving hymns and a generous repast in the Boyle Room to follow. Thereafter preparations proceeded apace with the parish admin team working on extra and revised orders of service for the many services with choir rehearsals and performances at the Devonshire Arms Country Hotel and in the Priory Church.

The choir managed an annual dinner at the refurbished Crescent Hotel which was enjoyed by all. Andy and Lucy Carr and their team decorated the Christmas Tree, Joan Mason and her team prepared 240 Christingles ( 3600 separate hand operations), Louise Black with her team prepared the great floral displays, Stephen Murgatroyd and his sidesmen managed lighting and extinguishing candles as well as administering the collections of alms and offerings. Matt Hey managed the difficult and contentious work of car parking.

Extra parochial services such as Roaming carols and Come and Sing were well supported and indicate a lively sense of community in prayer and song out with the usual Sunday congregation.

The weather was mild 8 degrees + as opposed to 8 degrees -, no wonder some snow drops are up on the Rectory Lawn. Congregations, like those nationally in Cathedrals and greater Churches as well as small country Churches, were higher than before.

THE PRIORY WELCOME TEAM VISIT TO CHATSWORTH, 2011

Christmas Decorations at Chatsworth.

The Welcome Team and their friends were given a warm welcome by the Duchess and her Head Housekeeper, who was the mastermind behind the decorations. The theme this year was traditional Christmas carol,s and we were all amazed at the splendour with which these were portrayed. There were stunning contributions from the local schools, especially the lavish (and very realistic) Christmas dinner, made of salt dough, set out in the State Dining Room.

The sunny afternoon gave the energetic ones amongst us the chance to stroll through the grounds and admire the beautiful autumn colour.

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY, 13 NOVEMBER

Below are three photos taken at our Rememberance Service on Sunday 13 November 2011. Displayed on the altar was a portable Padre's altar that was used in the trenches in the first World War.
We had a most moving service with the rector preaching an excellent sermon to a packed Priory Church.

James Pearson read out the names of those who lost their lives in the two World Wars.

THE WORLD'S BIGGEST COFFEE MORNING, - IN AID OF MACMILLAN CANCER RELIEF, 30 SEPTEMBER 2011

On a most beautiful day in glorious sunshine, Bolton Abbey Village Hall was the venue for this years Biggest Coffee Morning run jointly by the Bolton Abbey Estate & the Priory Church.

This was a most successful morning's event with generous support from those who attended. To date we do not have the total amount raised on behalf of this most worthy event, but watch this space!

James Pearson took some photos of the Coffee Morning. These are presented in the form of a slide show, which can be viewed by selecting the thumbnail image below.

THE SUMMER FETE, 29 AUGUST 2011

The previous two days saw us with heavy rain & high winds. Not what we wanted for our annual Fete!
However, the power of prayer prevailed and on the day of the Fete the weather was kinder to us.

This year's Fete was opened by the Countess of Burlington. The Duke and Duchess of Devonshire were also present.

A large number of people visited the Fete, which was probably the best yet. Hopefully they have been generous and spent plenty of money. We shall know in due course.
Congratulations to Chairman Colin Crabtree and his team for the excellent organisation, and to the many Priory folk who gave generously of their time manning the many stalls. It was a most excellent and enjoyable afternoon & the rain held off until just before the end.

Our grateful thanks to the Duke of Devonshire for once again allowing us to hold the event on his lawn. Well done everyone.

FAREWELL TO CHRIS AND MOLLY DAVIDSON

FAREWELL TO CHRIS AND MOLLY DAVIDSON

The morning service on 31st July proved to be a sad but at the same time a joyful occasion as the Priory Church bade farewell to Chris & Molly Davidson.

This lovely couple have been stalwart members of the congregation for over thirty years. Chris (now 101 years old) & Molly have decided to move to Brighton and be closer to their family.

Following the service, a farewell party for them was held on the rectory lawn. The Revd James Turnbull wished them every happiness in their new home and said how much we would miss them both. On behalf of the congregation he presented them with a painting of the Priory. God speed & may you both enjoy the sunny clime in your new home.

THE PRIORY SCHOOL OF EARLY MUSIC, BOLTON ABBEY, WHARFEDALE

Courses in liturgical Early Music are being initiated at the former Augustinian Priory Church at Bolton Abbey in Wharfedale. The one-day courses will cover Plainsong (the Gregorian Chant of the English Church) and polyphony of the Renaissance and Reformation. Some courses will examine the general nature of plainsong or polyphony, and some will be directed towards the repertoire for specific feasts or seasons as a possible preparation for performance in members’ churches. Whilst the courses are essentially for singers or choir directors, anyone with an interest in the subject will be welcome to attend. Each course will end with a short Vespers or Compline in the Priory Church.

It is hoped these courses will be regular enough to be the foundation of a Priory School of Early Music, perhaps also incorporating a recorder and/or viols consort performing concert as well as liturgical music.

The first course will be on Saturday 22 October and will be a preparation for Advent, looking at the Advent Prose, the Sequence and the Great ‘O’ Antiphons, along with Palestrina’s Matin Responsory and Gibbons’ “This is the record of John”.

Full details, including accommodation details for extra-diocesan members are available from: philip.baxter@bnc.oxon.org

Our New Organist and Choirmaster

Philip Baxter joins the Priory as our new Organist and Choirmaster from the beginning of July.

He has held many such positions in this country and abroad, although his first appointment was for a number of years at St. Margaret's, Ilkley. He has been an Oxford University College Fellow, and whilst Deputy Director of Education in the Diocese of Salisbury wrote the book "Sarum Use : the Ancient Customs of Salisbury" on the medieval liturgy in that cathedral.

Philip comes to the Priory with ambitions to enhance its musical reputation even further. We welcome him and wish him every success.

Two Presentations in the Priory Church, 26 June 2011

At the morning service on Sunday 26th June, two presentations were made.
The first was made to Caitlyn Mitchell, by the retiring choir master, Paul Allan who presented Caitlyn with the Light Blue level awarded under the RSCM voice &training scheme.
The second presentation was made to our retiring organist on his last day at the Priory Church by the Revd James Turnbull. James thanked Paul for all that he has done for the Priory, and on behalf of the congregation presented Paul with a gift. In his response Paul then thanked everyone and said how much he had enjoyed his two years at the Priory.

James Pearson took some photos of these presentations. To see larger versions of each image, simply select one, then close the window that opens by clicking anywhere inside it.

The Choir's Leaving Party for the Organist and Choir Master, - 12 June 2011

A very happy party, symbolising the time with us of the organist and Choir Master, Paul Allan, was held at a choir member's home on Sunday, 12 June, two weeks before Paul leaves.

Despite the happiness and camaraderie there was an underlying feeling of sadness that such a productive, satisfying and fulfilling association was going to end. From the beginning Paul has accurately assessed the capabilities of the choir and has brought out hidden depths of musicianship by his expertise and his friendly and caring character. The choir will be particularly sad to see him leave us as was expressed in a moving speech by Lionel Goodenough and, in poetic form by John Sheard. (See below)

A gift of an old print of the Priory Church with a cheque was presented by Rosemary Murgatroyd. Paul responded by saying that he too was saddened that the association was going to end but family arrangements had taken precedence. As all at the Priory know Paul has been very ably supported in all he has done by his wife Lesley and all the family. We have often had the benefit too of their son Seth as a member of the bass line in the choir. The family are moving permanently to Scotland and we wish them happiness and contentment in their new home. The occasion was concluded as the company shared a drink from an appropriate vessel bearing in mind the Scottish connection. This was from a Quaich or drinking cup used as a cup of friendship in the Highland of Scotland, an appropriate vessel in view of the Allan family's projected destination.

The Reverend James Turnbull

Paul Allan - by John M Sheard – Choir member since 1979

I would like to tell you a story,
Of a man who gained honour and fame,
He played the organ magnificently,
Paul Allan, that was his name.

He caused the Choir to work so well,
They liked what they were doing, and were praised,
His distinctive instruction, with a smile on his face,
Made us the happiest choir, and our standard was raised.

The music came weekly he’d produced from his home,
And there were times, of course, when some notes were not right,
Well if he didn’t accept it, we didn’t make a fuss,
And we certainly did not make a fight.

The challenge he gave us was doing us good,
And the Church had more music each day,
All the choir thank this man for all that he did,
And offer him every good wish on his way.

The choir are so sorry he has to move on,
But Thank Him for All He Has Done,
And although we shall miss his instruction so much,
I hope the Scots will now share in his FUN.
