Lacrimosa

This naive carving is on the gravestone of Sarah, wife of William Bell, in the Churchyard of St. Mary's in Norton, Stockton-on-Tees. Sarah died in November 1867, aged 47 years.

To me, the simple carving is an expression of enormous sadness. One can imagine the grief of William Bell at the loss of his wife at the time. I have given this image the title of "Lacrimosa" after the section of Mozart's Requiem, - the music of which expresses, to me, profound sorrow.

For the purposes of the panel, the print is a reverse image.
