Industrial Confluence

This view is from the Newport Bridge, one of the principal crossings of the River Tees, and shows the extraordinary industrial horizon associated with ICl's massive Billingham site.

However, this view is in the process of change. Only three or four years ago, a large power station was a prominent feature on the skyline. That has now been demolished.

Several towers associated with ICl's fertiliser manufacturing operations are no longer in use, and are due for demolition.

But one column has only been present for a year or so, on a plant that has just been commissioned!

Only two years ago, the Newport Bridge itself was decommissioned to river traffic, as there is no longer any large size shipping going upriver to warrant the bridge being raised.
