Symbols of Teesside

This view combines several elements that together symbolise much of Teesside.

The most important element is the Transporter Bridge, - almost a century old, and the only surviving bridge of its kind in the country. The Transporter is used on letterheads, in advertisements, and on posters as a powerful representational symbol of the area.

The second element is the River Tees itself, once the lifeblood of the area.

The building on the right, and the surrounding grassy area, is part of a now derelict quayside. Only 50 years ago, this was a busy port with steamships tied up alongside. All that has now-gone, with only decaying ruins to remind one.

The third element, but only distant, are the cooling towers of the chemical industry.
